The Story
Eagle Rare 17 is the most approachable bottle in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection in terms of proof, but don't let that fool you — 17 years in a Kentucky rickhouse produces a whiskey of extraordinary depth and complexity. Released annually in the fall alongside Stagg and WLW, it's often the overlooked sibling simply because it doesn't carry the barrel-strength mystique. That's the bourbon world's loss. This is a mature, elegant, magnificently balanced whiskey that stands with anything produced in the United States.
Nose, Palate & Finish
Nose
Elegant and complex — dried oak, dark honey, toffee, and a subtle floral note open up slowly. There's a leathery richness underneath with hints of dried tobacco and dark cherry. The 17 years shows clearly on the nose: it has a depth that younger bourbons can't replicate.
Palate
Medium-full body with exceptional balance. The age brings substantial oak but it's perfectly integrated — you get toffee, dark fruit, dried herbs, and leather all in harmony. The lower proof makes it one of the most drinkable BTAC expressions neat, without water. Every sip is measured and precise.
Finish
Very long, dry, and oaky with lingering leather, dried fruit, and a hint of dark chocolate. This is a finish that makes you understand why age matters in bourbon. It stays with you.
