The Story

Single Barrel takes the bonded Small Batch recipe and pulls it apart into one barrel at a time, so you get whatever that particular barrel decided to do. It varies bottle to bottle more than the Small Batch, and the barrel number's right there on the label if you want to compare notes with someone who had a different one. Genuinely interesting bottle for what it costs.

Nose, Palate & Finish

Nose

More individual than the Small Batch — you can tell it's a single barrel. Caramel, oak, dried cherry, a good amount of rye spice. Some barrels lean fruitier, some lean more grain-forward.

Palate

Full-bodied at 100 proof, with the rye spice standing out more than it does in the Small Batch. Oak, dried fruit, pepper, and a sweetness that's a little more restrained. Rewards drinking slow.

Finish

Long and spiced, with oak and rye character hanging around. Longer than the Small Batch, and it varies bottle to bottle since it's single barrel — but it consistently finishes well.

The Verdict

One of the best bottles Buffalo Trace makes at this price. Bonded requirements plus single barrel character plus the high-rye mashbill adds up to something genuinely worth comparing notes on with other people who've had a different barrel.
