The Story

Green River runs out of a restored 19th-century distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky, with real bourbon history behind it. It sat dormant for decades before coming back to life in 2021, and they've quietly been putting out solid whiskey ever since. This particular bottle is a store pick from ABC Fine Wine & Spirits — someone there tasted through barrels and picked this one specifically, which usually means it's a notch above the standard release. Store picks are one of the better deals in bourbon, and this is a good example why.

Nose, Palate & Finish

Nose

Caramel and oak right away, with vanilla and some dried fruit behind it. There's a corn sweetness that's very Kentucky, plus a little nuttiness. Has some presence at barrel strength without being a lot.

Palate

Big, well put together. Corn sweetness carries into brown sugar and butterscotch, then oak and a little pepper come in to balance it out. Nothing feels out of place.

Finish

Long and warm, spice and oak sticking around after the sweetness fades. Ends a little dry, a little smoky. Good length for the price.

The Verdict

Green River doesn't get enough credit right now, and this store pick shows why it should. If your local ABC has barrel picks from them, it's worth grabbing. Good value for what's actually in the glass.
