Bourbon Review
John J. Bowman Single Barrel
Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey — Pioneer Spirit

The Story
The A. Smith Bowman Distillery has been operating in Virginia since 1934, making it one of the older craft operations on the East Coast. John J. Bowman is their single barrel expression — a 100-proof Virginia straight bourbon that gets more attention than most bourbons from outside Kentucky, and for good reason. Each barrel is selected individually, so variation exists bottle to bottle, but the house style holds: rich, dessert-forward, and built for sipping.
Nose, Palate & Finish
Nose
Generous vanilla and caramel right up front — this one doesn't make you work for it. Underneath there's toasted oak, a bit of cherry, and some cinnamon spice. At 100 proof it has a warmth on the nose that's inviting rather than aggressive.
Palate
Full and creamy entry. Brown sugar and butterscotch dominate the mid-palate, with waves of baking spice and dried fruit following close behind. The oak is present but not pushy. There's a pleasant rye spice kick in the back half that keeps things from getting too sweet.
Finish
Medium-long, warm, and spiced. The sweetness fades into a dry oak and vanilla tail. Clean and satisfying — not the most complex finish, but exactly what you'd want from this style.
