Rye Whiskey Review
Sagamore Spirit Rye
Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey — 750ml Hand-Bottled

The Story
Maryland rye has a long history that got wiped out by Prohibition and never fully recovered — until recently. Sagamore Spirit is one of the operations working to bring it back, distilling on-site in Baltimore and leaning into the Maryland style: a bit sweeter and softer than its Pennsylvania cousin, but with plenty of rye character. The distillery sits on the waterfront and uses limestone-filtered spring water from their property in Rockland, which they credit for the whiskey's smooth character. Whether it's the water or the grain bill, something is working.
Nose, Palate & Finish
Nose
Classic rye on the nose — fresh dill, caraway, and a bit of mint up front, softened by underlying vanilla and caramel. There's a gentle floral quality and a hint of dried citrus peel that keeps it interesting. More refined than aggressive, which suits the Maryland style.
Palate
Lighter-bodied than many ryes at this price, but well-composed. The rye spice comes through clearly — pepper, herbal notes, and a slight earthiness — balanced against a caramel sweetness that keeps the whole thing approachable. Not a lot of heat at 41.5%, which makes it very easy to drink neat or in a cocktail.
Finish
Shorter than some, but clean. The rye spice lingers pleasantly, fading into a mild sweetness. Nothing off, nothing overstayed — it exits politely.
