The Story
Sazerac 18 is the rare opportunity to taste what rye whiskey becomes with two decades of patience and a Kentucky rickhouse. Released annually in the fall as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, it's drawn from barrels that have been aging for 18 years — an extraordinary commitment for a rye. The result is a spirit where the aggressive rye spice of youth has been softened and deepened by the oak into something more complex, more refined, and more interesting than almost anything else in the category. At 90 proof it's beautifully approachable.
Nose, Palate & Finish
Nose
Old and distinguished on the nose — dried herbs, toasted oak, leather, and a faint mint note that identifies the rye mashbill. There's dark honey, dried fruit, and a woody richness that speaks directly to the 18 years in barrel. Subtle and refined where Handy is bold and aggressive.
Palate
Medium body with a silky, refined character. The rye spice is present but fully integrated — there's pepper and caraway in there, but they share the stage with toasted oak, caramel, dried cherry, and leather. This is what mature rye looks like, and it's a different animal entirely from younger expressions.
Finish
Long and distinguished with dried wood, leather, and a subtle herbal note fading slowly. The sweetness is minimal and the overall character is dry and sophisticated. A finish that reflects the patience it took to produce this whiskey.
