The Story
Thomas H. Handy is the rye equivalent of George T. Stagg — barrel proof, unfiltered, released annually in the fall as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Named after the man who popularized the Sazerac cocktail in New Orleans in the 19th century, Handy is a 6-year-old rye that punches so far above its age it's almost embarrassing. The high proof amplifies every characteristic of the mashbill — the pepper, the herbal notes, the grain — into something genuinely spectacular. The best rye whiskey produced in America most years.
Nose, Palate & Finish
Nose
Explosive on the nose — fresh dill, mint, caraway, cracked black pepper, and a wave of dark fruit and caramel that the high rye content makes more interesting than it has any right to be. Even with the proof, the nose is inviting rather than punishing. Add water and it becomes almost perfumed.
Palate
Massive rye spice on entry — pepper, herbal bitterness, and a sharp, oily grain character build quickly. Underneath the spice there's caramel, dried cherry, and a sweetness that keeps it from being purely aggressive. Water is essential here and reveals layers of complexity that the full-proof entry conceals. A challenging and deeply rewarding palate.
Finish
Very long and spiced — the pepper and herbal notes carry far into the finish alongside a warming heat that radiates through the chest. The sweetness fades first, leaving a dry, complex, and satisfying tail. One of the best finishes in American whiskey.
