The Story

Single Barrel is the top of the regular Weller lineup — one barrel, no blending, bottled at 94 proof. Because it's single barrel, no two bottles are exactly the same, and store picks of this one are some of the most sought-after shelf finds in bourbon. A good barrel is a special pour. If you see a store pick, it's worth asking who selected it before you buy.

Nose, Palate & Finish

Nose

More individual than the rest of the lineup — every barrel's a little different. Usually caramel, honey, vanilla, and oak, but the balance shifts bottle to bottle. Some lean sweeter, some lean more oaky.

Palate

Full and smooth at 94 proof. The wheat softness carries through, so it doesn't hit as hard as a high-rye bourbon at the same proof. Vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, oak — the mix depends on the barrel, but it's consistently well put together.

Finish

Medium-long, with the finish varying more than usual since it's single barrel — some run spicier, some fruitier. Worth comparing bottles if you get the chance.

The Verdict

This is the most interesting bottle in the lineup because you genuinely don't know exactly what you're getting until you pour it. A great barrel is something special. Even an average one is still a really good bourbon.
